What is shaping?
I thought it was supposed to be hard. That worked against me. Here’s what I figured out.
Why this matters
You can make the room visible instead of leaving it to chance.
Tell the AI what kind of work you are doing, what remains uncertain, what it may decide, and what still requires a person. This is ordinary communication applied deliberately, not prompt engineering theater.
The useful control
Set the room before you ask for the work.
The interface already speaks human. You do not have to dress the model in a costume. State what kind of room you are in, what must stay separate, what you know, what you do not know, and where the boundaries are.
Constraints do more useful work than inflated roles: don’t do this; stay in this lane; use evidence you can cite; let me think out loud until I say go.
Try it
- Name the kind of conversation you need.
- State the boundaries and what must not happen yet.
- Separate exploration from decision and decision from action.
- Ask the model to reflect the room back before beginning.
