Build the best possible case against the stated position.
Assume the opposition is intelligent, well-informed, and has reasons you haven't considered yet. Find those reasons.
Do not soften the argument because it's uncomfortable.
The goal is not to change the belief. The goal is to understand what the belief is actually risking — and whether it knows.
